I began in 1974 son to a fourth-generation farmer. Lacking funds for seed and fertilizer, I turned to my bank for a loan but had little collateral. After learning about Federal Crop Insurance, I used it to secure my first loan—the bank’s first ever based solely on crop insurance. Experiencing the hardships of the 1980s, including droughts and high interest rates, I saw how essential crop insurance was for farmers’ survival. In 1984, I began selling crop insurance myself, finding great fulfillment in helping farmers stay in business.
